A
few weeks ago, the Robert Berger Pediatrics Club sponsored the annual
Make-A-Wish Date Auction. The Peds Club
works hard all year for this event, and it definitely showed!
Some
highlights:
Name:
Peter
Position:
M1
Talent:
Juggling
Review:
Seeing as how I can barely walk and chew gum, I give a standing ovation to the
guy. He juggled clubs, rings, and
glow-in-the-dark balls (to the Haddaway classic “What Is Love,” which got us
all headbopping).
Name:
Dr. Noto-Bell
Position:
OMM Professor
Talent:
Singing, accompanied by one of the OMM fellows on the guitar
Review:
Dr. Noto-Bell is one of my favorite professors here, and hearing her sing has
probably bumped her to “most favorite.”
She’s an excellent teacher and clinician, and has a wonderful singing
voice. Maybe if I ask her to sing during
my practical this week, she’ll get so distracted that she won’t notice that my
technique is less than perfect.
Name:
Dr. McDonald
Position:
Pathology Professor
Talent:
Performing martial arts and being an all-around cool guy
Review:
Turns out Dr. McDonald (main pathology professor at PCOM, head of the Forensic
Medicine program, medical examiner…he’s the PCOM AC Slater) was trained by some
of the superstars in the martial arts world before he was injured, so he showed
us some of his “moves.” Even though
there were no bags or people to help him demonstrate, it was pretty clear that
you don’t want to run into him in a dark alley.
Not only could he seriously hurt somebody, but he would know how to hide
the body AND he has enough contacts in law enforcement to make sure he was never
caught. The five highest bidders won a
trip to the medical examiner’s office to watch him perform an autopsy; sadly,
since I spent all of my money on buying raffle tickets (who could pass up the
chance to win a Five Guys gift certificate?!), I wasn’t one of them.
Name:
Jason and Gary
Position:
M2s
Talent:
Poetry
Review:
Jason and Gary were two separate acts, but since their performances fall into
the same category, I figured I’d combine them.
Jason performed the work of Tyler Mali, and Gary read his own work,
inspired by the time he spent at City Year (an AmericCorps program). I just sat completely entranced during these
acts, because who knew that outside of the classroom, these guys were such
engaging literary performers? It’s so
easy to lose oneself in the constant grind of classes, exams, and studying, and
watching Jason and Gary reminded me that we are more than just academic
robots.
Overall,
the Pediatrics Club raised over $6,000 for Make-a-Wish to help send Cameron
(their sponsored girl) to Disney World in April!
